PS20 Reads! Read-A-Thon 2026
The PS20 Read-A-Thon seeks to encourage a love of reading in our students through friendly, collaborative competition. Between Friday, February 27 - Sunday, March 8, 2026 students and families will record every minute the student spends reading outside of school hours on the For Our School website. We also encourage you to use the For Our School portal to request donations from friends and family to support the library and school-wide literacy programs.

Can students turn in paper reading logs instead of using the For Our School website?
Paper reading logs are distributed to help students track their minutes when they do not have access to the website. We strongly encourage families to log all minutes on the website. If a student chooses to turn in a paper reading log instead of using the website, it must be legible and have a parent or teacher signature. Only turn in a paper reading log if you cannot use the website.
Why is there a daily minute limit?
Not all students have the same amount of free time. A cap levels the playing field and keeps the competition fair and achievable. We want to celebrate making reading a daily habit and encourage a life-long love of reading, not just who can log the most hours.
How are the class thresholds set?
The thresholds are based on classroom totals in each grade from last year’s readathon. We have tried to set them at a challenging but achievable number.
How can we view results?
You can track totals on the For Our School website and on the hallway bulletin board outside the main office. Final results will be tallied during the week of March 9 and announced by the end of the week.
What if I forget to enter minutes on the For Our School website?
We encourage you to enter your student’s minutes every day but reading sessions can be entered after the date of the session until 10:00pm Monday March 9. While the site will remain live after that time, only minutes entered before that time will be counted.
Can my student log their own minutes on the website?
Yes. We ask that parents and caregivers review their student’s minutes before the end of the event.
Where does the money raised go?
The majority of the money will be used to purchase new books for the school library which is stocked well below the recommended inventory needed to support a robust lending program. Priority is given to purchasing books the students want most via a request box outside the main office. Last year we were able to raise over $18k and added more than 900 books to the library! This year our goal is $20k!
Thanks to our retail partner Greenlight Bookstore for supporting PS20 Reads!
Thank you students, families and teachers for making the first PS20 Reads! Read-a-thon in 2025 an astounding success!
The level of excitement and commitment from the students was incredible - over 430 students participated! In2025, the students of PS20 collectively read 127,831 minutes and raised over $18,000 for the library and literacy programs. Read-a-thon may be over but let’s keep this enthusiasm for reading going! Students can continue to add to the book title tree display in the main hallway and look out for a new suggestion box where they can tell us what books they want for the library. Congratulations to all!
